Backcountry Ski Touring and Snowboarding
The Two Thumb Range lies well to the east of New Zealand's Main Divide. This means it enjoys a higher percentage of good weather than mountains further to the west. Yet our private hut at 1300m is high enough to receive good snow throughout the winter months, July-September.
Exploring this glacier-sculpted landscape on skis is very rewarding with panoramic views of the Southern Alps. The East Face of Aoraki/Mount Cook looms as you ascend Snake Ridge and Beuzenberg Peak, 2070m, and Mt Hope, 2086m, are worthy summits.
Ball Pass Trek
Follow in the footsteps of pioneer climbers, including Sir Edmund Hillary as you climb up towards Ball Pass. Savour views of the full length of the Tasman Glacier and its surrounding 3000m peaks. Be awed while watching ice avalanches thunder down the Caroline Face, as you relax in the safety of Caroline Hut. Watch the sun rise and set on Aoraki and Mt Tasman, New Zealand's highest mountains. Participants need to have had lots of overnight hiking experience, be sure-footed and very fit to tackle the steep, rugged terrain. Professional guides outfit you with the necessary gear (including crampons and ice-axe) and take care of the cooking. They will teach you basic mountaineering skills and...
