Family Holiday Itinerary
Take your time and explore Christchurch and Canterbury with the family. Begin your journey in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
Day 1: Arrive in Christchurch
Explore the central city by Christchurch Tram with live commentary from the friendly and knowledgeable driver. There are 17 stops that you can hop on and hop off throughout the inner city, be sure to stop at the Margaret Mahy Playground for some fun in the sun.
Grab a bite to eat at the Riverside Market that will suit every taste buds.
Spend the afternoon with some family time and get up close and personal with some adorable animals at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve or International Antarctic Centre or Orana Wildlife Park.

Day 2: Drive to Hanmer Springs
Drive out to Hanmer Springs, 90 minutes north of Christchurch and start the morning with a relax and play at Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa.
Challenge the family to a game of mini golf or hop on a Village Cruiser to explore the alpine village.
Enjoy an afternoon of adventure with Hanmer Springs Attractions or Hanmer Adventure Centre from jet boat, bungy, quad biking to claybird shooting.
Stay the night in Hanmer Springs with plenty of family friendly accommodation options to choose from.
Day 3: Drive to Kaikōura
Drive north for 2 hours to the seaside town of Kaikōura and spend your day whale watching with options of boat, plane and helicopters available to suit your family’s preference. Kaikōura has an abundant of other marine animals as well from dolphins to albatross. Not to mention the seals where you can enjoy a kayak trip or jump into the water and swim with the seals.
If there’s one place in Canterbury where you should indulge in seafood, Kaikōura is it. A trip to Kaikōura wouldn’t be complete without a taste of it’s namesake delicacy, there’s plenty of ocean bounty to enjoy here.

Day 4: Drive to Christchurch
Take a leisurely 3 hours drive back to Christchurch and spend the afternoon at the Christchurch Adventure Park, home New Zealand’s longest and highest zipline.
If you want to take it easy then head to Lyttelton for a bite to eat or to the Christchurch Gondola for amazing city and harbour views.
Enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants on The Terrace before heading back to your Christchurch accommodation.
Day 5: Day trip to Akaroa
Spend the day exploring nature’s playground in Akaroa, only 90 minutes drive from Christchurch. Get up close with the world’s smallest and rarest dolphins with a dolphin swim or a harbour cruise. See the Little Blue Penguins in their natural habitat with Pohatu Penguins or make some furry friends at Shamarra Alpacas.
Feeling a bit peckish? Enjoy a fish and chip lunch on the wharf or have lunch at one of the many cafes and restaurants in the village.
