Ōtautahi Christchurch will once again play host to a raft of cricketing heroes at the upcoming T20 Tri-Series between the BLACKCAPS, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Kicking off from October 7, the Tri-Series will involve seven matches over eight days at Hagley Oval as part of the build-up to the T20 World Cup in Australia.
It will be the last chance for fans to see these top cricketers in action before they jet across the Tasman for the World Cup showdown.
But it won’t be long until Christchurch is back in the international spotlight – a one-day international between the BLACKCAPS and India will take place on November 30, along with a T20 match between the WHITE FERNS and Bangladesh on December 2.
The BLACKCAPS will also play both a test and a one-day international against Sri Lanka at Hagley Oval in March 2023. Tickets for all the matches are available now through tickets.nzc.nz.
The epic announcement proves that our vibrant city continues to reassert itself as a viable host for major international sporting events.
Earlier this year, Hagley Oval hosted five matches for the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, including the sold-out final in April. Despite Covid-19 restrictions limiting attendance at some of the games, the net benefit to Christchurch was $2,313,449. Net benefit includes all of the measured social and economic costs and benefits of hosting the event. The gross global TV viewership of the 2022 ICC Women’s World Cup matches played in Christchurch reached 11.4 million, with India contributing 7.6 million of this.
The tournament’s success and the announcement of upcoming international matches come on the back of investments into the city’s cricketing infrastructure. This was reinforced in May when the $5 million Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre opened alongside Hagley Oval, elevating the precinct to new heights for future generations of Cantabrian sportspeople.
Bearing the name of one of Canterbury’s favourite cricketing sons, the world-class facility boasts gender neutral changing rooms with direct access to outdoor training nets, cricket lanes with 20-metre run ups, all sitting within an 850sqm multi-use space available for other sports and community groups.
